School Drama™ is a professional learning program for primary school teachers that demonstrates the power of using drama pedagogy with quality literature to improve English and literacy in young learners.
STC partners each participating teacher with a STC Teaching Artist for the school term. Together they explore how drama strategies can be integrated into any area of English and literacy, such as inferential comprehension, confidence in oracy, descriptive language or imaginative writing.
Over seven weeks the Teaching Artist team teaches the program with the teacher in their classroom, modelling the drama strategies and empowering the teacher to confidently integrate these ideas and strategies into their regular teaching practice.
Alyson has been a School Drama™ Teaching Artist since 2013, firstly in Sydney and then in the Albury Wodonga region. Through the program she was worked with over 30 teachers and their classes, including schools within Reiby Juvenile Justice Centre (Sydney) and Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre (Wagga Wagga). Recently Alyson took School Drama to Katherine High School (NT), where she spent a week working with 3 English teachers and their low literacy classes.
